Dollar’s Rollercoaster Week: From Thursday’s Rally To Friday’s Reversal

Four trading days, four different dollar stories. This week’s currency market offered a compact lesson in how quickly sentiment can flip on a data-driven market, with the greenback swinging between gains and sharp losses almost daily.

Illustration representing a volatile week of dollar swings summarized

Tuesday: Strength in equities and softer crude oil prices weighed modestly on the dollar, with the index slipping a marginal 0.03% as risk appetite favored other assets.

Wednesday: The dollar slid further as stocks pushed to fresh record highs and mixed US economic reports failed to offer the currency much support, extending the week’s early softness.

Thursday: The pattern reversed sharply. Lower-than-expected jobless claims and a stronger-than-expected productivity reading gave the dollar a genuine boost, alongside a jump in crude oil prices that added further support to the index.

Friday: Everything flipped again. A weak July jobs report, showing an unexpected payroll decline alongside a steep downward revision to June’s figures, sent the dollar tumbling to a fresh seven-week low, dragging it well below where the week had started.

The net effect of this back-and-forth: gold and silver ended the week sharply higher on the Friday reversal, EUR/USD and most major pairs pushed higher against the dollar, and market expectations around the pace of future Federal Reserve rate cuts shifted meaningfully in just a few trading sessions.

Weeks like this are a useful reminder of how sensitive currency markets remain to individual data surprises, even amid bigger ongoing stories like the yen intervention saga running in parallel. Next week’s data calendar will likely determine whether Friday’s dollar weakness marks the start of a more sustained trend or just another swing in an already choppy month.
