A UK-based pound sterling stablecoin just took a step toward greater transparency. Nephos has agreed to attest the reserves backing Agant’s GBPA token, adding an independent verification layer to a corner of the crypto market that has faced persistent scrutiny over reserve backing.

GBPA is designed to track the value of the British pound one-to-one, giving crypto markets a sterling-denominated alternative to the dollar-pegged stablecoins that currently dominate the space. Independent attestation of the reserves backing such a token matters because it offers external confirmation that the stablecoin is genuinely holding the assets it claims to, rather than relying purely on the issuer’s own reporting.
This development sits at an interesting intersection between traditional currency markets and crypto infrastructure. As stablecoins denominated in currencies beyond the dollar slowly gain traction, reserve transparency becomes an increasingly important factor in whether traders and institutions are willing to hold and transact in them at scale.
For forex-focused traders, sterling-denominated stablecoins remain a fairly niche instrument for now compared to spot GBP/USD or GBP/EUR trading. But their gradual maturation, including steps like this attestation agreement, is worth watching as a slow-building bridge between traditional currency markets and blockchain-based settlement rails.
