Gold Holds Near $4,342 As Traders Await Wednesday’s US CPI Test

Gold is holding steady near $4,342 an ounce, caught between easing geopolitical tension and growing anticipation of Wednesday’s US inflation report, a combination that’s kept the metal largely rangebound over the past few sessions.

The metal’s recent price action reflects two forces pulling in opposite directions. Renewed tension around the Strait of Hormuz earlier in the year pushed investors toward gold as a safe haven, but that same tension also risks driving oil prices higher, and pricier oil tends to feed directly into consumer inflation. Higher inflation, in turn, raises the odds of a more hawkish Federal Reserve, a scenario that typically weighs on gold rather than supporting it. That tug-of-war has left the metal largely treading water in recent sessions.

More recently, tensions around the strait appear to have eased somewhat, with renewed hope for a US-Iran de-escalation helping calm some of the safe-haven demand that had been supporting prices. With that geopolitical driver fading into the background, attention is shifting squarely toward Wednesday’s Consumer Price Index release, which will offer the clearest read yet on whether recent oil-price moves are actually showing up in broader inflation data.

A hotter-than-expected CPI print would likely reinforce expectations for continued Fed caution on rate cuts, a headwind for gold, while a softer reading could reopen the door for the metal to test toward its recent highs.
